What is the Underwriters Laboratory?
Underwriters Laboratory (UL) is an independent, third-party testing agency. It was founded in 1894 with the express purpose of promoting safe living and working environments by establishing dependable product safety ratings.

What does TRTL-60x6 Stand For?
TR stands for ‘Torch Resistance.’ TL stands for ‘Tool Latency.’ The TRTL-60x6 rating indicates that the safe can withstand an attack with both a torch and tool by UL’s skilled engineers for 60 minutes. In order for the engineers to successfully gain access to the safe, they must either:
- Open the Door
- Create a 6-inch Square Hole in the Safe’s Door or Body
If the engineers are unable to achieve either of these two goals, the safe is awarded a TRTL-60x6 rating.
TRTL-60x6 Safe Performance Testing Requirements & Procedures
The full blueprints of a safe are provided to the UL’s engineering team prior to testing. Furthermore, the team fully dissects the safe prior to testing. Both of these advantages allow them to identify potential weak spots or flaws in the design and develop a game plan for their attack.
Throughout the test, engineers use a combination of torches, electronic tools, and manual tools to gain access to the inside of the safe. These implements can include:
- Torches
- Common Hand Tools
- Picking Tools (such as a pick ax)
- Mechanical or Portable Electronic Tools (such as drills and power saws)
- Sledgehammers
- Grinders (such as angle grinders)
The time limit for a TRTL-60x6 rated safe is 60 minutes. However, this time can be deceiving. When the test is being conducted, the clock is only running while engineers are actively working on the safe.
If the team pauses to change tools, review the blueprints, discuss a new plan of attack, or simply take a water break — the time stops. In reality, a ‘60 minute test’ can often take several hours (if not all day) to complete.
How is a TRTL-60X6 Safe Constructed?
Super Platinum safes feature a single-piece body construction. Both the door and the body are multi-layered structures that combine outer and inner steel plates. They are reinforced with steel bars and a monolithic casting of Alchornite — ISM’s patented torch- and drill-resistant composite material. The body and door are then triple-reinforced with ISM’s patented anti-penetration alloy grid.
Three-way active bolt work is coupled with a double-action locking mechanism. Glass plate relocking protection is installed on all safes in front of the locks..
Each Super Platinum safe comes with two locks:
- UL Listed Group 1 manipulation proof combination lock
- A double bit key lock
It’s also worth noting that all models of the ISM Super Platinum TRTL-60x6 can be outfitted with a three-movement time lock or a Group I electronic combination lock with a time delay and/or time lock.
